Libya: Revolution or Uprising

10th March 2011

The Word revolution has been much used by journalists and bloggers when covering the uprisings in the Middle East. But have have we seen a true revolution yet? The word means a turning over of the existing system; regime change; a fundamental change.  While revolution may yet come, what we have seen so far is the departure of a couple of leaders. The systems that kept them in power largely remain. In Tunisia, Some feel too many of the old guard still hold sway and in Egypt the army is still the main power in the land.  Will the Egyptian army really support free and fair elections? in Lybia, we are certainly seeing an uprising but at the moment who is to say whether "civil war" may yet be a better descriptor than revolution.
